Note: An emancipation certificate for the freedom of Abraham Hollenbeck's slave, Jupe.
To all men by the presents that I Abraham Hollenbeck of Canaan Litchfield County and state of Connecticut. Do hereby make free and emancipate my negro man servant Jupe publicly announcing and quitclaiming unto the said Jupe all right claim and authority that I have or may have unto the said Jupe as a master. The said Jupe hereby being forever released from any claim by me as a master over a servant. He having a full right and power to act and dispose of himself and his earnings or any property that he may acquire without any control of mine whatever as a master.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 25th day of February AD 1796

This may certify that we the subscribers (civil authority and select men of Canaan Litchfield County) have examined into the state and circumstances of Mr. Abraham Hollenbeck's negro man Jupe this day liberated and made free and give it as our opinion that the said negroman is more than 25 years and less than forty five years old and that he is healthy and well and capable of conducting and providing for himself. Dated at Canaan 25th February AD 1796
